BULAWAYO group Makokoba Rhumba Sounds have promised to do their best when they represent the city at the Chibuku Road to Fame national finals taking place at the Glamis Stadium in Harare tomorrow.
They will compete with Those Guys (Midlands), Walk of Life (Matabeleland North), Mark Sounds Band (Manicaland), African Roots (Mashonaland East), Grade 2D (Mashonaland West), Wezhira Band (Masvingo), Motto Super Sounds (Matabeleland South), Black Sight (Mashonaland Central) and Adequate Sounds (Harare) for the top spot.
After having won $1,000 for winning the provincial finals, the sungura, afro-jazz and rhumba bands are now vying for the grand prize of $5,000 and a recording contract.
The group which will take second position will bag $3,000 while $2,000 has been set aside for the third group.
Eight-member Makokoba Rhumba Sounds said they were confident they would bring the Chibuku title home as they have been hard at work preparing for the competition.
“We firmly believe that hard work pays off and when we get to Harare, we’ll go all out to ensure we come back with the title.
“We’ve been practising ever since we were announced Bulawayo winners in August,” said Itai Munengiwa, Makokoba Rhumba Sounds lead vocalist.
He said some of their members had already left for Harare for final preparations.
Entertainment at the finals will be provided by music giants, Jah Prayzah, Alick Macheso, First Farai, last year’s Chibuku Road to Fame winners Attack Jazz Band, Shinsoman, Killer T and Winky D among others.
The event, organised by Delta Beverages and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, is meant to promote the development of music and dance groups.
