A Chirumhanzu man, 19, allegedly broke into a house where he stole property worth $1,000, ate the complainant’s food after which he relieved himself in the kitchen.

Herbert Chiurugwi of Vhondo Village under Headman Chaka appeared before magistrate Musaiwona Shotgame facing two counts of unlawful entry and theft.

He pleaded guilty and Shotgame remanded him in custody to November 3.

Prosecuting, Bernard Nyoni told the court Chiurugwi committed the offences on September 25 this year.

At around 5PM Chiurugwi went to Edson Maraga’s homestead where he picked up a stone and broke a dining room window to gain entry.

Maraga, the court heard, is a teacher at Mukomberanwa Secondary School.

“While inside the house Chiurugwi burnt down the bedroom door and stole a laptop, cell phone chargers and a Samsung cell phone from the room,” said Nyoni.

“The accused proceeded to the granary where maize was stored and removed three layers of bricks which covered the portion in which maize was stored.”

Nyoni told the court Chiurugwi stole six 90 kilogramme bags of maize.

Chiurugwi, the court heard, went to Maraga’s kitchen where he ate food which the teacher had left on the table and in pots. Nyoni said that Chiurugwi then relieved himself.

Villagers allegedly tipped off police who arrested Chiurugwi the following day.

Police recovered all the electric gadgets he had stolen, the court heard.
