A 21-year-old Midlands State University student yesterday dragged his father to the maintenance court demanding that he finances his studies.

Kelvin Chuzu who is supposed to be in his second year told magistrate Adelaide Mbeure that he failed to register this semester because he failed to raise money.

He applied for $348 monthly maintenance to pay his fees from his father Lovemore Chuzu.

“I’m supposed to be in my second year but I have not registered because I have an outstanding amount of $480. My fees in total amounts to $630 per semester,” said Kelvin.

He also alleged that his father could afford to pay his fees but was making excuses to avoid taking responsibility.

Chuzu who is employed at Dulux paints as a merchandiser, earning about $600 per month, said he could not afford to pay the maintenance money claiming he had other responsibilities.

“I hear his application but the court has to consider my plight. I can’t afford the amount he is claiming. I can only afford to pay $250 a month for his welfare,” said Chuzu.

“I’m also maintaining his mother who gets $118 per month from my salary and that is why it’s going to be difficult for me to pay maintenance of $380.  I also have the responsibility of taking care of my other minor child who is in Form 3,” said Chuzu.

Mbeure asked Chuzu to present his bank statement before the court by the end of the day before making her final ruling. The case continues today.
