GWANDA town has run out of space to bury senior citizens.

Senior citizens were buried at Gwanda Senior Citizens Cemetery along the Gwanda-Kezi road.

The issue came up during a full council meeting on Tuesday when there was a resolution to bury Mathemba Sibanda, younger brother to Gwanda Central MP Cde Madodana Sibanda, at the cemetery.

Mathemba died two weeks ago after a short illness.

The town’s mayor Knowledge Ndlovu said the debate had been overtaken by events as Mathemba had already been buried at probably the last grave.

“There’s no more space for senior citizens and the council is looking at establishing another cemetery. We can’t wait for senior citizens to die so that we have the cemetery,” said Ndlovu.

The senior citizens cemetery is where luminaries who worked for the betterment of Gwanda are buried.

In Bulawayo, a similar cemetery – Lady Stanley – filled up recently forcing the Bulawayo City Council to create an extension which is also fast filling up.
